Visiting old friends...

As I've said many times before it's amazing what you find when you clean.

I'm currently typing this on my original PowerBook Pismo that I found in a box while looking for something else.

Now it's slower, has less ram than the other notebooks, and in general is no longer suitable for decent web use (it really won't run Flash among other things) but it has some serious advantages over other notebooks I've used.

For instance the keyboard action and layout is considerably better than a great number of other laptops. The spacing for where your wrists connect with the top is just right for me and each key on the keyboard has a subtle strength that is either too strong or too weak in other keyboards.

And even at this age the OS connects nicely to a WPA 11G router without any hassle.

The version of OSX on this machine is 10.3.9 and there are a number of things I like about that version over other later versions. Not the least of which is that it was a much more open system allowing you to customize a TON more than anything later. (I want my damn customizable boot apple dammit!) And Panther just seems more...real...than Tiger, Leopard, or Snow Leopard.

There are some downsides to this box though. The first and most obvious to me is no multitouch. That means no two-finger scroll for me and frankly I do miss it. The second is that the trackpad button is a LOT more stiff than later versions. It actually takes a great deal of force to click it.

And while this would be a good writing platform it will never be able to run a decent piece of monofocus writing style software. Not unless it's full-screen terminal based software. The horsepower isn't there.

I've got half a mind to install a different hard drive and see if Linux will be any faster on this box. Probably not due to hardware constraints but it's possible. The other thing I don't think Linux will deal with on this box is the "smart" batteries. But since those are better than the old Blackbird ones I'm probably wrong there.

(Speaking of which I also found my Blackbird still bootable and running OS 8.x complete with bad cover paint and brass bolts holding the hinges together. If I get a chance I'll post a picture of it.

Needless to say this Pismo is the laptop that I pretty much started writing on in any electronic format and with any frequency. For writing it may very well do a great job but really I need to come up to speed with something that is at lease Core2Duo in nature so I can work on things other than writing.

Still no word on if this job is going to be permanent or not. I'm hoping that my performance has been good enough that they decide to keep me.

One last note before I hit myself with a hammer to get some sleep... A big thanks to those that have donated to help my daughter get an iPad and software! We're not anywhere near our goal yet but anything helps at this point.

Now...off to dream of dark alicorns with crescent moons on the flank...
