Stone ground pain...

July 29, 2008 9:45 AM

So I’m home for the next couple of days thanks to a small calcified blob of crystals in my liquid waste removal system.

I’d been having pains in the side area on and off over the last month or so and had attributed it to back pain but yesterday the pain came back and became a little too much to bear so I went to the ER and they took blood and did a CAT scan and found a kidney stone. A fairly large kidney stone.

Thankfully it’s almost in the bladder so this should be all over in 3 - 4 days. In the meantime I’m stuck at home because of a strainer. *ahem*

People seem to be reacting in two different ways. Most are the “OMG! I don’t want to even know this exists!” and tend to not want to talk to me for fear of me mentioning something painful or unmentionable. The others are _full_ of advice. Both are mildly annoying but if I had to choose I’ll take the people that don’t want to talk about it right now.

Early on I decided to take the polite path and be fairly discreet about things and just leave everybody else out of the loop. Posting here is an exception mostly because it’s my own personal thought space and if I write it down it’s less on my mind. much as it could be anyway...

And yes mom I’m drinking lots of water and resting. ;-)

At least I have Vicodin.

On a more positive note we harvested the second batch of beans and the first batch of cucumbers from the garden last night. There’s still quite a bit out there that will be ripe very soon.

Frankly at this point I’ve pretty much given up weeding for two reasons. One because I’m going to till up the place in the fall anyway and two because I don’t want to deprive the beetles of their food sources lest they move to the vegetables despite the tobacco spray.

The beetles are almost done for this season so if I can delay them until they go away it’ll all work out.

I may weed near the peppers but frankly I don’t hold out much hope for them. It’s too late in the season, there’s only two plants out of the bunch doing even okay, and that whole damn area has become choked with those stinking “smart weeds”. You know the ones - they look kind of like jade plants. Supposedly they’re edible too but I think I’ll pass on them.

No sign of watermelons yet but with a late August/early September harvest I’m not too surprised about that. There are still blooms on some of the vines yet.

Talking with my wife I think when I till the space up I’ll expand it to come out to the edge of the garage. That’ll give me at least two more rows for next year and will place the rain barrel inside the garden area where it will do the most good. (It hasn’t arrived BTW. I bought one of these: and I hope to buy more as money permits. No overflow on that one but that’s easily added and since it’s just taking water off of one gutter on the garage it shouldn’t fill that fast.)

The truck is doing well and I’m quite happy about that. It went from 14 mpg to 18 mpg and if I tweak some more things I might be able to get that Magnum V6 back up to 20 mpg. In the meantime I need to ride the bike more. I would have ridden the bike into work on Sunday but the whole hospital thing got in the way.

I’ve shelved the Bradley/EV project again for now. I just don’t have the resources right now...
