The cold from hell strikes again!

January 28, 2009 11:16 AM 1/28/09

So today I’ve got my once a year cold from hell. Symptoms include but are not limited to:

Clogged sinuses/nose.

Aching back.

Sore throat.

Tiredness.

The urge to eat 12 gallons of chicken dumpling soup.

Needless to say I had to live with one pot of chicken broth and elbow noodles which sufficed very well at 6 a.m. this morning. Taking all my vitamins and a vicodin for my back because I slept wrong helped as well. The throat thing was compounded by the fact that my nose being clogged caused me to sleep with my mouth open all night. This roughly makes a throat consistent with 80 grit sandpaper. Not fun.

Sinker dumplings:

1 egg.
1 large glass bowl filled with flower.
Water.
1 medium pot of either chicken or beef broth brought to a boil.
Optional: Basil in the chicken broth.

Mix the egg and enough water into the flour to make a batter that is slightly more fluid than peanut butter and contains no pockets of dry flour in it.

Take a large metal serving spoon and dip it for 10 - 20 seconds into the boiling broth before using it to scoop up a spoonful of the batter and dump it into the broth.

The dumpling will sink to the bottom to cook. Repeat the process (including pre-dipping the spoon) until the bottom of the pot is fairly full. It’s important to make sure the spoon is fairly clean before each dip or the dumplings won’t slide off into the broth easily.

The dumplings are done when they float to the surface. You can continue to add dumplings as new ones float to the top until you run out of batter.

Serve in a standard soup bowl for mushy chewy chickeny goodness.

This mix doesn’t store well nor stay heated well in the pot for long periods of time because the dumplings break down making a kind of gumbo texture to everything. Still edible it just looks weird.

Anyway this mix scales well for a little or a lot. The larger the pot the better but within reason obviously.

This is also about the cheapest and most filling winter food to make that I know of.

Damn. Now I’ve got a taste for it but I don’t want to go out to the store. Tempted to start a PeaPod account if they didn’t cost so damn much.

Oh well there’s other food I can eat and we shouldn’t be spending money anyway...

Mmm... sounds good. Any kind of chicken soup is good, really. I like celery in mine, it adds a nice zing.

Thanks!

Still clogged and coughing today so yet another day spent home resting. I hate being sick because it makes work pile up badly. :-(
